Resilience During Layoffs: Finding Strength in Challenging Times

The massive layoffs in 2023 have tested many people’s resilience during layoffs, presenting challenges that require both strength and courage.

“Always take hold of things by the smooth handle.” – Thomas Jefferson

To all who are navigating this challenge, may you find the resilience and courage needed during this difficult period. In times like these, it is natural to get into the state of depression and lose motivation. But our faculty must refrain from going that route and avoid “holding the rough handle”.

To elaborate more on the handle, Epictetus, Greek Stoic philosopher, says,

“Every event has 2 handles: one that allows you to carry it and another that doesn’t. If your brother does you wrong, don’t grab it by its wrongdoing because this is the handle incapable of lifting it. Instead, use the other, that he is your brother, with whom you grew up, and embrace the bond you share and then you uphold the hand that it carries.”

So, you grab the handle that gives you strength, the one that gives you agency, not the one that strips you of it. You grab the one that gives you hope. Every situation has a handle.

Choose to grab a handle that gives you agency.

Have you been laid off?
Great!

You now have the time to sharpen your skills even more to make sure this does not happen again. Or maybe you were so focused with work before and haven’t spent much time with your loved ones. Now is the chance. Or perhaps start a business that’s been occupying your mind for years. Whatever it is, we have the power to grab the handle that gives us strength, gives us hope and that pushes us forward.

P.S. Entrepreneurs and visionaries built many of today’s giants during the most uncertain times.
To name a few:
– Microsoft (1975, recession of 1973-1975)
– LinkedIn (2002, post dot-com bubble)
– Uber (2008, Great recession)
– AirBnB (2008, Great recession)

Layoffs are tough but they also offer a chance to show resilience. Embracing this period positively can lead to growth and new paths. How you handle today’s challenges paves your future success.
